Significance of Durga Puja

Swami Sarvalokananda’s address on Ashtami (21st October 2015) for Durga Puja

Some excerpts from the talk:

Mother Durga doesn’t come alone. She comes with Mother Lakshmi, Mother Sarasvati, Lord Ganesha and Lord Kartika. Why do they also come?

Mother Durga is called the remover of all evils. She comes to destroy all ‘asuric’ forces. Mother Lakshmi is the symbol of wealth, name, fame and respect.

Goddess Sarasvati has tremendous power of wisdom, learning. She is the giver of all knowledge and

Mother Lakshmi is the giver of wealth. She grants prosperity – which we all seek. She is the power of wealth.

Lord Ganesha is the giver of success. He is the slayer of all obstacles (vignaharta) that come in the way of success.

Lord Kartikeya is the Commander of the Gods. He is the symbol of strength, courage and valor.

Therefore, for material success we need all three – Mother Durga, Mother Sarasvati, Mother Lakshmi, Lord Ganesha and Lord Kartikeya.
